On Thursday, 19. 11. 2020, New University hosted academic forum dedicated to the Judicial Reforms in Comparative Perspective: Croatia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The chair, Prof Matej Avbelj, was joined by three distinguished speakers: Prof Alan Uzelac (University of Zagreb), judge Jan Zobec (Supreme Court of Slovenia), and Prof Kamil Baranik (Faculty of Law of UMB, Slovak Republic).

The academic forum was intended to discuss the state of judiciary in three EU member states to identify the strengths and weaknesses, and in particular to pave the path towards the necessary reforms.

On Monday, 22.6.2020, The British Embassy, Centre for European Perspective and Bled Strategic Forum hosted webinar entitled: When Brexit meets a pandemic: What’s next for the UK–EU future relationship?.

The moderator of the e-event, Katja Geršak (Executive Director of Centre for European Perspective – CEP) was joined by four distinguished speakers:

• Anand Menon, Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at Kings College London and Director of UK in a Changing Europe,
• HE Sophie Honey, British Ambassador to Slovenia,
• Matej Avbelj, Professor of European Law, New University,
• Ulla Hudina, Representative of the Slovene Government (TBA).

On Thursday, 4 June 2020, New University hosted the e-academic forum dedicated to the launch of the book on »The Impact of European Institutions on the Rule of Law and Democracy: Slovenia and Beyond«.

The speakers – Wojciech Sadurski (Challis Chair in Jurisprudence, The University of Sydney Law School), Gabor Halmai (Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law, European University Institute), Bojan Bugarič (Professor of Law, The University of Sheffield), Jernej Letnar Černič (Associate Professor of Human Rights, The New University) and Matej Avbelj (Professor of European Law, The New University) – took the book as its point of departure to discuss, in particular, the following questions:

• What are the differences and similarities of the crises of constitutional democracy in Central Europe, with a special focus on Hungary, Poland and Slovenia?
• What could and should be done about it on the national and supranational level?

On Thursday, 16 April 2020, New University hosted the e-academic forum which was intented to present a book, entitled: »The Impact of European Institutions on the Rule of Law and Democracy: Slovenia and Beyond«.

All three autors of the book – dr. Matej Avbelj (rector of the New University), dr. Jernej Letnar Černič (Vice-Dean of the European Faculty of Law) and dr. Gorazd Justinek (Dean of the Faculty of Government and European Studies) – participated in the discussion at the presentation of the book.

On Tuesday, 18 February 2020, New University hosted a third in a series of Academic Fora dedicated to the Future of the European Union, entitled: Migrations, EU and armed forces.

The chair, dr. Liliana Brožič, was joined by three distinguished speakers:

• dr. Branimir Furlan (Military advisor of the Minister of defence),
• Boštjan Šefic (Secretary, advisor of the Minister of defence) in 
• dr. Rok Svetlič (Research Counsellor, Law Institute Science and Research Centre Koper). 

The third Academic forum was intended to discuss future challenges in the field of the EU’s joint foreign and security policy, with a focus on migration to the EU and the role of the armed forces in protecting the Schengen borders. Slovenia also faces some problems with the police and the Slovenian Armed Forces in protecting the state border, which indicates that migration is a very important topical issue. That’s why the discussion also offered possible solutions to tackle illegal migration more successfully in the future, both at national and EU level.

On Thursday, 12 December 2019, New University hosted a second in a series of Academic Fora dedicated to the Future of the European Union. The series is conducted within a framework of the research project entitled “The Integral Theory of the Future of the European Union”.

Speakers of Academic Forum – dr. Matej Avbelj (research project leader), H.E. Florence Ferrari (French Ambassador to Slovenia), Ulla Hudina Kmetič (Acting Head at European Commission Representation), dr. Katarina Vatovec (Assistant Professor of European Law) – were talking about legacy of the Treaty of Lisbon, its strengths and weaknesses and the possibility of the Treaty change in the near future.
